Cash discounts - rediscovered!!

A busy week at SIMSR, with the mid terms on and everyone reluctantly turning to books at a time like this. I was studying accounts when i googled a question our professor had put to us in class, and I stumbled on this article. It talks about the rational for determining cash discount percentage and period. An interesting article. Hope it helps you :)

1st Anniversary

This is the first post of this blog. And it begins on a very auspicious note, as today is also the 1st birthday of Quantinuum. Let me ramble a bit about Quantinuum.

We are a small group, belonging to K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai (or SIMSR). We love numbers, and our group's aims are as follows

  1. To learn the latest and not-so-common quantitative tools that can be used by managers to solve business problems
  2. To spread our love of numbers to others who fear them. We firmly believe that numbers add a beautiful meaning to our life and we would like to spread that thought as far as it goes.

Quantinuum was formed by our Professor Nilakantan, along with the 2008-10 PGDM students. In July 2009, they were joined by more quants enthusiasts. Over a year, we have organised several fun competitions like Sudoku, Crossword Quizes, Business games, Seminars, Puzzle games, and even a research-paper competition. In honour of our 1st anniversary, we organized E-Tambola - an online event which lasted for 10 days. We sold tambola tickets, and participants were asked to check their e-mails regularly at 10.00 p.m. Questions - quantitative, quirky and fun were posed. The contestants had to solve them, and send us the answers to get the numbers for that day. This was conducted for 10 days, until the grand finale, which was today.

The event was held in the Seminar Hall at 6.00 p.m. It began with a fun game of Sudoku, where participants were handed the papers. It was just like regular Sudoku, but with a catch - instead of numbers 1-9, 9 different symbols were used. It was appreciated and enjoyed by all those who participated. The time allotted was 20 minutes, and although many people completed the puzzle within the given time, only the fastest (complete and correct entries only) entries were declared 1st and 2nd prize winners.

After this, 2 of our members, Sravan Kumar and B.K.Chaitanya of PGDM B (2009-11) gave a short presentation on Fibonacci series and its application in predicting behaviour of stocks. It was a very enlightening presentation, and it sparked the keen interest of the audience. There were many questions, and both the presenters were able to provide accurate and satisfactory answers to all of them. The presentation ended with the application of Elliot curve to predict stock behaviour. It was noted by all that while Fibonacci series could be used to predict a stock's behaviour only during a particular frame of time, when there are no major turbulances in the external environment, Elliot curve could be used in less stable circumstances also.

Following this, the numbers for the last day, today, were called out. The 2 full-house winners were declared. Sahil Arora, from PGDM B (2009-11) was the winner of the 2nd row as well as 1st full house, and received Rs 300/- cash prize. The other winners are as follows -

SUDOKU -

1.Gaurav Singh (PGDM B 2009-11)
2.Rachi Agrawal (PGDM B 2009-11)

E-TAMBOLA -

1. Avinash Hegde -early five(PGDM A 2009-11)
2. Khushboo Ramraika-top line (PGDM IB 2009-11)
3. Mrinal Malhotra-bottom line(PGDM B 2009-11)
4.Apurva Srivasthava-2nd Full House (PGDM B 2009-11)

All the winners received cash prizes.

After the prize distribution we were addressed by Professor Nilakantan. After congratulating us on our 1st anniversary, he rightly advised us to be more pro-active so that we can take our little community to achieve greater heights. He stressed on the meaning of real education at a b-school, which is to broaden our horizons and gain more knowledge through organizing events as well as participating in them, and not just limiting ourselves to classrooms and exams. On this happy and inspirational note, our event ended. Everybody who attended felt elated and happy. The audience, though few, felt happy that they attended, and even the people who hadn't won felt very satisfied after participating. We, the members, left feeling content and motivated. Content, because the event went well, and the audience had appreciated our efforts. Motivated - to organise more events in the future.

Signing out on this note. Keep reading this space for more!!
